I’m starting my review at the end. I attended Yakimono for the annual Melbourne Food Wine Festival. With Yakimono staging their usual CRAY CRAY event something I’ve always wanted to go to.

“So I’m leaving waiting for the elevator. I look at myself in the shining doors. I’m gleaming smiles from ear to ear. Yep that was a good great awesome amazing experience. I’m so glad I got time to thank my friend head Chef Daniel Wilson. His team did an excellent job. “
Now the review.
CHARCOAL ROASTED EDAMAME
NORI SALT
* Delicious bitter charcoal against the salt was perfect with the sweet yummmy Edamame. Great starter. Perfect with Fairy Floss top cocktail of VODKA, LYCHEE, NIGORI SAKE, LEMON, UMEBOSHI AGAVE, ITALICUS KAGU-TSUCHI. Awesome. I’ll tell the truth I had just as much fun playing eating the Fairy Floss as I did the soy beans.

CRAYFISH
SUMISO, AVOCADO, IKURA, NORI CRACKER CRAYFISH SUSHI
* The nori cracker was amazing. Sweet spicy sea flavour with a crunch. The entire dish was delicately sweet spicy and just dam yum. Smooth avocado with delicate crayfish sushi. Loved it
&
CRAYFISH SUSHI SPICY PEACH, CRISPY POTATO
* Wow crackling potatoes meets they did say spicy peach. Perfectly balanced blend to carry the crayfish and deal the sushi’s seaweed. Excellent balance dish. Delightful.

BBQ CRAYFISH SKEWER YUZU TOGARASHI BUTTER, PICKLES
* Yep heaven again. Now it’s quite as good as eating cray of newspaper with nothing but vinegar. Like I used with an amazing family. But P is bloody close. Heavenly BBQ Crayfish with very peppery spices (TOGARASHI see below). That balanced with sweet sour yuzu and crunchy pickles. Are perfect matches to the devine delicious charcoal crayfish. This why I want to come to this event. Crayfish singing on my tongue spicy sweetness dancing around my taste bud. Love loved it. Yet is is but a simple dish done to perfection.
Shichimi togarashi will typically include yuzu, ginger, red chilli powder, seaweed, black and white sesame, as well as the perfumey Japanese cardamom called sansho

JOSPER ROASTED CRAYFISH & SQUID INK RICE BLACK GARLIC AIOLI, TOBIKO (Flying fish roe).
* Black GARLIC 2 nights in a row. THANK YOU of glorious food gods. Oh yeh the rest of the dish.
* Crayfish slightly steamed to release the precious cargo. Meat then mixed with squid ink rice and ginger placed in the crayfish half legs claws and all. Coated in BLACK GARLIC BUTTER. Then quickly heated over coals. So flavours of: Charcoal Ginger Squid ink excellent cooked rice oh yeah crayfish and then garlic. Come on who does this to me. It’s unctuous umami delicious every word known to describe good stuff.
* So I did the right thing use fork and spoon to eat the heavenly deliciousness from the tale. But then it was the way a good old mate taught me (Hi P) in with the hands. So now I’m back in the old days cracking claws and get sucking out sweet delights. The table beside asking how do you do that as they kept smashing the legs with a spoon. I’ve been trained I replied. Sorry it’s confidential. By now I’m hands to elbows in awesome crayfish juice, sticky black garlic. I wouldn’t have it any other way. A main dish to remember and relish in.
* You bet I did. I had so much fun with this one. Just pure joy.
* Please the white wet wipes they provided.

SPICY CABBAGE SLAW
LIME MAYO, SESAME PRALINE CARAMEL
* Surprisingly excellent balance with the crayfish meal. I’m sure the chef isn’t surprised. But the light seasoning & vinaigrette on the salad worked perfectly. Add some delicious crispy sesame. Perfect accompaniment.

MOCHI CAKE
SALTED PRALINE, POPCORN ICE CREAM
* By now I’m stuffed. The cake light chewy delight. The ice special. But alas it’s just a wee taste. My stomach is saying NO.
So I’m leaving waiting for the elevator. I look at myself in the shining doors. I’m gleaming smiles from ear to ear. Yep that was a good great awesome amazing experience. I’m so glad I got time to thank my friend head Chef Daniel Wilson. His team did an excellent job.

I’ve been to yakimono a few times however I hadn’t gone recently ! I was keen to go and saw there were new menu items. I definitely ordered them!

What we ordered:
- Waygu Tartare on crispy rice 4.89/5 ⭐️

I do wish the crispy rice was fresh and hot. Ours was a bit cold and made it chewy and hard however I enjoyed the flavour of the meat and definitely something to eat if you come here

- mushroom croquettes 5/5 ⭐️

All I can say is WOW and do not underestimate this delicious dish

- kingfish sashimi 4/5 ⭐️

- octopus 5/5 ⭐️ one of the best dishes on the menu !

Definitely love the vibe and staff are so friendly and make the experience good

We had bottomless brunch here a few weeks ago. Cool venue but that was probably the extent of it. We all agreed there wasn’t enough food. The sushi was very tasty, the chicken was good too. Drinks took a long time to come out even though it was midday on a Wednesday and service was average. Drinks were nice though. Nobody was rude or anything but you had to work hard to get anyone’s attention. Again, not what we were expecting when coming out to a mid week bottomless.

I really enjoyed this place the first time I went (aside from the very loud music) then I came back and it was generally a good experience (still with loud music) until I got up from my seat to use the restroom … there was some man sitting at the counter near the kitchen on his laptop who needs lessons is manners and customer service. Yakimono don’t make it clear that the walkway through the kitchen (which is wide open) isn’t for customers so if you didn’t know, which you wouldn’t, you’d walk through there to go out. Beware, if you even attempt to walk through there and the man with the laptop is nearby, you will be met with rudeness. He will “stop you there” and sternly redirect you. I understand the rules but not the approach, kindness goes along way and his lack thereof was enough to put me in a terrible mood and ruin an otherwise enjoyable lunch. The worst part was he approached me again to tell me it was for my safety but was still rude about it! Honestly if you read this, you are no better than the customers who visit that restaurant so stop acting like a drill sergeant and understand it’s the customers who keep the wheels turning not the terrible attitudes of the people who run it. Also put a “staff only” sign up!

Loved it when I went there the first time but this round was a huge disappointment. First of all music was blasting loud not conducive to have conversations. Food was served either cold or warm, I had to send the miso soup back as it was cold to taste most restaurants served the soup piping hot all the fried stuff we ordered were warm. I understand sitting times are limited but seriously you don’t clear the table without first asking the customers if they are done this is hospitality basic 101.

Was alright, not really worth the money spent and they rush you out. I left hungry after having the set menu for a group, most things were tasty but no where near enough food to fill you up

Kingfish, salmon and tuna sashimi - excellent, great contrast of sourness and a popping texture vs the soft, smooth sashimi.

Dynamite tuna hako was pretty good, and can’t really go wrong with chicken karaage.

Pork belly chashu was very average. Pork tan tan noodles completely smothered in overwhelmingly sesame-forward / salty sauce. Do not recommend.

Food on average was on the over-salted side and music was too loud (I guess it’s a preference thing).

You are paying for the location and atmosphere here. The food isn’t really any different to any other Japanese izakaya except for a few dishes. It’s a modern interpretation of Japanese food. $20 for a single grilled prawn is a bit steep but the octopus and Japanese influenced cocktail were very good.
Nice bar seating with view of the action at the grills.

First and foremost what incredible architecture and design. A real feast for the eyes, terrific ambience and decor. I felt New York vibes dining here.

Excellent service.

We didn’t eat a lot as we were going to a concert but the food we ordered was luscious and flavoursome. Definitely loved the croquettes as a highlight. The cocktails were also nice.

A bit steep… we only ordered appetisers and drinks and it was very pricey but still definitely would be back.

The first thing you notice are the sleek, chic interiors. The food and cocktails were inventive and well executed too - the salmon, sando and octopus were our favourites. Attentive service as well. Overall, a fun dining experience!

The set menu was absolutely sensational.
We celebrated our businesses collaboration and made plans for successful events & new beginnings.

Setting was incredible.

The food was other worldly.
